NHS trust second in country to deploy solution designed by clinicians

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is to deploy the eHandover clinical IT solution from Ascribe across its emergency care division.

Designed by clinicians to replace the paper-based systems currently used to manage the clinical handover of patients that takes place during shift changes, the solution was originally developed in partnership with Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The rollout at Mid Cheshire aims to improve patient safety and reduce risks associated with the breakdown in communication that occurs during traditional patient handovers.

Built using Microsoft SharePoint technology, the solution was awarded an EHI Award for Best Use of IT to Promote Patient Safety in 2011.

Dr Shirley Hammersley, spokeswoman at the trust, said: “Effective handover is crucial to safe, High-quality patient care and we are excited to be working with Ascribe to put this innovative solution in place. This has been made possible by the support from a successful application in a highl- competitive bidding process to Medical Education England and its Better Training, Better Care project. It is the partnership of specific training and an efficient system that will ultimately improve patient care.”

Stephen Critchlow, chief executive at Ascribe, added: “Informing carers as patients move from one care setting to the next makes a real impact on patient care and safety.”
