Yewdale launches improved features for their anti-ligature en-suite door

Published: 10-Feb-2022

Yewdale, a leading privacy and screening solutions manufacturer, are paving the way to make their popular anti-ligature products even better for service users and those in the mental health industry

Since the launch of the YewdaleKestrel® SafeDoor, the fail-safe en-suite door has been aiding positive recovery. The SafeDoor is made from faux leather and is designed with safety in mind – breaking away under excess weight, widely used across many healthcare trusts like Sussex Partnership Trust.

In a case study involving the trust, the Head of Estates, Colin Reeves, explained a recent exchange with a service user, who said:

"I understand from time to time I go into crisis and really run the risk of harming myself. I feel safer knowing the door is in place," – Service user, Sussex Partnership Trust

The magnetic anti-ligature en-suite door now has improved webbing, and Yewdale recently launched a new SafeDoor feature at the Design in Mental Health Conference 2021, too.

IPC approval: PVC coated webbing to prevent infection

In the current climate, where hygiene and infection control is crucial for healthcare, Yewdale stepped up to the challenge and continued to improve their products. The anti-ligature SafeDoor now comes as standard with PVC coated webbing – the webbing safely encloses the magnets that attach the door to the architrave.

The PVC coating ensures that healthcare services can easily clean the webbing and help prevent infection. The new material has undergone vigorous testing to withstand daily cleaning with NHS approved disinfectant and comes with a Durasafe accreditation. The industry has well-received this material change – also backed by Infection Prevention Control (IPC).

"IPC and healthcare professionals prefer the PVC coated webbing to the previous material as it is easier to clean – saving resources and controlling infection" – Grant Shimwell, Business Development Executive.

New additional feature: Self-closing hinge

As well as the new PVC webbing to help the industry, Yewdale has thought about making the SafeDoor more adaptable to aid service users. The SafeDoor is now available with a self-closing hinge, ensuring the door always returns to a close position without the user.

The new self-closing hinge provides privacy and automatic dignity for service users and those who may find it difficult to close their en-suite door due to mobility issues in particular.
