Buildings are being demolished to enable work to be carried out on the new accident and emergency department at Leicester Royal Infirmary.
The £43.3m project also includes major work to build a new multi-storey carpark to tackle ongoing staff and patient parking issues at the site.
The new emergency unit is being built in two phases , with new adult and children's A&E departments expected to be completed by December 2016, and followed by a 'frailty unit' for the elderly.
Construction of the six-storey car park, providing more than 400 extra spaces, is scheduled to be finished by the end of the year.
Richard Kinnersley, major project technical director at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, said: "We are really pleased that building works for our new emergency department and multi-storey car park are on track.
"The demolition work is nearly complete, and we will start work on the new building soon."
He added: "Anyone visiting the site recently will have seen big changes and lots of activity, firstly with the bridge on Infirmary Way being dismantled, followed by the building between our current emergency department and the Victoria building, the oldest building on our site which was built in 1771."
The new A&E department will include CT and MRI scan facilities and a mental health unit, with bigger cubicles to see patients and additional ambulance bays.
