It represents a vital step as we seek to expand our heart attack service to become a full 24/7 centre for primary percutaneous coronary intervention, which is considered the treatment of choice for anyone having a heart attack as it gives them the best chance of not just surviving, but making a good recovery

WORK has begun on building the Lister Hospital's second permanent cardiac catheter laboratory. When open in October 2011, the £4.5m facility will allow the expansion of both capacity and range of cardiac services currently available. It will also support the Hertfordshire trust's plan to expand cardiac services and will help to increase the overall efficiency of the unit. Dr Diana Gorog, clinical director for the trust's cardiology team, said: "The Lister's second cardiac laboratory will enable us to fulfil a growing demand for invasive cardiac procedures including angiography, angioplasty and pacing. It also represents a vital step as we seek to expand our heart attack service to become a full 24/7 centre for primary percutaneous coronary intervention, which is considered the treatment of choice for anyone having a heart attack as it gives them the best chance of not just surviving, but making a good recovery."
