Work has been completed on the new Finchley Memorial Hospital, the largest healthcare development delivered through the NHS Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT) procurement framework.
The purpose-built facility replaces a 100-year-old building and is set within a landscaped health campus, providing outdoor community spaces, a memorial garden, playing fields and a café.
Commissioned by North London Estate Partnerships, the building was designed by Murphy Philipps Architects and constructed by Galliford Try Partnerships.
The aim was to create an exemplar patient environment at the same time as supporting more effective staff working patterns.
Extensive glazing brings natural light into the heart of the building and double and triple-height spaces enable clear views throughout the hospital, assisting wayfinding and helping to create calming and therapeutic spaces.
The building facade contains cladding with shades of green and blue and shading devices and external terraces introduce elements of light and shade to the elevations. The colours are replicated internally to form the basis of the signage and wayfinding strategies.
The scheme has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating through the use of innovative sustainable strategies, featuring as one of only 20 projects in the RIBA Healthy Buildings exhibition. The project also features as a case study in the Department of Health’s publication Tomorrow’s Healthcare Environments – towards a sustainable future.
