Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (UHB) has adopted best practice in infection prevention by installing Vernacare’s Vortex human waste disposal units across its University Hospital Wales site.
By using Vernacare’s single-use urinals, bedpans and other containers, and then immediately disposing of them in the hygienic Vortex machines, the hospital is reducing the risk of cross infection in patient toileting and washing.
The system is popular with nursing staff because, as well as minimising infection risk, it maximises the time that can be spent caring for patients rather than washing and disinfecting reusable containers.
Two Vortex units are located on most wards and are in operation 24/7. With constant use, a durable and easy-to-maintain system were key factors in selecting the system.
A spokesman for the estates department at Cardiff and Vale UHB said: “The Vortex machines are well engineered and durable. This is very important considering they are used so frequently.
“Our engineers find the machines straightforward to maintain. The machine diaphragm opens up and there’s space inside to deal with the electronics. If the problems are complex, then we can call Vernacare's engineers, who are very helpful and responsive. Availability of spare parts is also excellent."
The UK-engineered Vortex, which is designed to work with Vernacare’s single-use products, will process four items in just two minutes. It uses a twin-blade design and cold water cycle to disintegrate the waste products and wash the particles safely down the drain with the waste water.
