First development of its kind to open in the area next year

Work begins this week on the development of 60 extra care flats on the old Strand School site in East Marsh, Grimsby.

Construction follows a successful planning application by Ashley House to North East Lincolnshire Council for the scheme, which was commissioned by the North East Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (NEL CCG).

Extra care housing represents a real alternative to traditional residential care as it allows people to retain their own property, address and front door while having easy access to the care they will need to keep healthy and independent

Jake Rollin from NEL CCG said: “This is an exciting time as we move one step closer to opening our first extra care housing scheme. Extra care housing represents a real alternative to traditional residential care as it allows people to retain their own property, address and front door while having easy access to the care they will need to keep healthy and independent.

The wider community has already benefitted from the capital receipt paid to the council for the site and we hope that additional benefits will also come in the form of employment and business opportunities. We hope that this will be the first of many such schemes across the county.”

Indepth community consultation and a specially-formed co-design panel has given designers, Condy Lofthouse Architects, greater insight into the needs of future residents. Particular attention has been given to the adaptability of the environment so that it can support the needs of the individual to live independently for as long as possible. This consultation will continue throughout the construction process.

Project manager for Ashley House, Colin Rimmer, said: “We are delighted to be taking steps towards delivering this first accommodation of its type in Grimsby. It will provide frail and elderly members of the community with the ability to live independently with onsite care.”

The extra care flats will be built by Wildgoose Construction to provide secure accommodation that meets the needs of older people, supporting their health and everyday requirements, including an outdoor garden and internal community spaces.

David de Silva, chief executive of Inclusion Housing, said: “The development will include a café/restaurant, which will provide meals for residents and other members of the community, and a multi-functional community space which will host a number of health and wellbeing activities including a mobile hairdresser and podiatry services”.
