Award winning healthcare solutions provider Teal has equipped the new Morriston Hospital with its innovative furniture collections, as part of a new £60m hospital project at the Swansea site.
Teal worked in close collaboration with key stakeholders at Morriston Hospital, part of Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board to deliver the very best in reception facilities, including full project management, supply and installation of furniture to create areas which break from traditional NHS design and create an exciting first impression ‘wow factor’.
The new development marks a sea change in facilities at the hospital, with significant improvements to the existing buildings, built during the 1940’s, marking a sweeping transformation of some of the oldest hospital buildings in Wales. It is estimated that 264,000 patients a year will use the new facilities.
The extension houses the main outpatients department, radiology and education centre, while renal dialysis, dental and X-ray departments also form part of the new building.
New public waiting areas including main atrium, Paediatrics ward, radiology and renal areas of the hospital are equipped with Teal’s ‘Adeo’ healthcare reception/atrium seating, designed to create a bright, contemporary and non clinical feel, while co-ordinating with the stylish Interior. Teal designed the scheme to ensure accommodation of the maximum number of seats within the main waiting areas, supplying 149 Adeo beam seating units, totalling 533 seating places in Anthracite, light blue, mint green and a bespoke lilac.
Clinical staff, including the Infection Control and Physio teams played a key role both in the design process of the facilities and healthcare furniture, considering a number of key criteria in the selection process and helping to ensure the new environment supports the needs of both patients and services.
“Adeo provides highly durable, no maintenance seating, with a non-tear, ‘spring effect‘ PU seat to provide an appropriate level of comfort. An open seat design also eliminates concealment in seat corners. The ‘V’ leg shape base works well with the floor, offering easy cleaning. Physical weight is also very important - users did not want the beams to be floor fixed, nor be easily moved” said Karen Gibbs, Capital Projects, Equipping Officer.
“Installation of Adeo followed a 9-month trial, where the units were in daily use within the hospital, as part of the product evaluation process. Key stakeholders at Morriston worked in partnership with Teal to get the best results and were very happy with the delivery and installation on this flagship project” added Karen.
Adeo met the Hospital’s requirements for aesthetics and durability in high traffic public waiting areas, while meeting the Health Board’s infection control protocol. Adeo features moulded Medipur PU seats with anti-bacterial finish technology and a single piece beam - easily cleaned for infection control. Units were fitted with armrests to assist elderly patients to rise from the seat. Adeo is available in various seat configurations with bariatric options up to 220kg (35 stones). The PU material used is also environmentally sustainable.
Stylish and contemporary ‘Ikon’ stacking chairs are also installed in the Training and Education Centre. Ikon is visually inviting with anatomically moulded, easy clean seat, back and armrest, designed to provide maximum comfort during long periods of sitting.
The new Endoscopy Department has been equipped with a KwickScreen mobile dignity screen, providing flexible space management without having to create permanent walls.
