SUSSEX Partnership calls for photographs tackling mental health stigma

SUSSEX Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is calling on service users, staff and members of the public to dust off their digital camera lenses and start snapping against mental health stigma. Positive Image – Picture a World Without Stigma is the annual countywide digital photography competition aimed at promoting understanding of the experiences of people with mental health difficulties. The winning photos will be announced on World Mental Health Day on 10 October. Jim Holden, a Sussex-based photographer and member of the judging panel, said: "For the second year running the judges are inviting people from all walks of life, whether they have used mental health services or not, to rise to the challenge of tackling mental health stigma. Through pictures we want to show that people with mental health problems can still enjoy meaningful, creative and productive lives, that mental illness is common and can happen to anyone, and that through support, understanding and positive messages we can challenge and overcome stigma and ill-informed attitudes.
