AWW architects wins Community Benefit Award for new development

AWW has scooped the Community Benefit gong at this year's RICS South West Awards for its work designing the new South Bristol Community Hospital.

The building was developed and funded by Bristol Infracare LIFTCo utilising the LIFT procurement initiative, with Community Health Partnerships head tenant for the building.

Designed by AWW and constructed by Carillion, the scheme aims to change the approach to primary and community care in the city. It is a major healthcare hub for a population of over 200,000 and is providing a wide range of primary healthcare services, including two 30-bed wards, occupational therapy and outpatient services, day surgery operating theatres, a minor injuries unit and podiatry and radiology clinics.

Director, David Perkin, said: “Being a community hospital, the community was put at the heart of the design process. This award is for everyone who contributed and everyone who campaigned for almost 60 years for the hospital to be built.”

Antek Lejk, executive director for the South region at Community Health Partnerships, added: “I am very pleased that the hospital has received this commendation. The award recognises the partnership’s commitment to transforming the estate for the benefit of the local community.”

The new hospital will provide a range of outpatient clinics, diagnostic tests accessed by direct referrals from GPs, 60 inpatient beds for rehabilitation including specialist stroke rehabilitation, day surgery and endoscopy, along with a new dental teaching facility which will also provide free routine NHS community dental services.
