Portakabin secures largest-ever contract at Royal Stoke University Hospital

£13.5m contract will include creation of 56 new inpatient beds, two theatres, a recovery room, and en-suite single rooms

Portakabin Hire has been awarded a £13.5m contract – the largest in the division’s 52-year history – to expand ward and theatre accommodation for orthopaedic services at Royal Stoke University Hospital.

A complex 4,000sq m, two-storey building will be constructed in less than four months to increase capacity at the hospital, to the benefit of patient care.

Due for completion in the spring, the purpose-designed facilities will include 56 new inpatient beds, two theatres, recovery room, ‘dirty’ and ‘clean’ utilities, single rooms with en-suite bathrooms, staff changing rooms, reception, kitchenette, offices, and an integral plant room.

Commenting on the project, John Simpson, director of corporate services at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, said, “We appointed Portakabin for its capabilities to deliver this challenging scheme on time and on cost. It is being built to a very short construction programme so we can have the new facility up and running as early as possible, meeting the increasing demand for services and enhancing patients’ experience.”

“The company’s manufacturing centre in York is an impressive operation which maximises off-site working. This is important to help us minimise disruption to patient care on a fully-operational and highly-constrained hospital site. Seeing the building in manufacture also gave us the reassurance of the resources, the quality of the approach, and its commitment to delivery on programme and on budget.”

The building will be craned into position as 124 steel-framed modules which will be delivered to site complete with wall finishes, internal partitioning, M&E services and flooring already in place, further reducing work and disruption on this busy hospital site. The cranage phase will be a complex operation as the site is located adjacent to other wards and close to the A34, which will restrict vehicle movements.

Portakabin Hire provides accommodation for wards, recovery suites, dialysis units, diagnostics, outpatient departments and treatment centres. All the hospital facilities are constructed to the latest healthcare standards, including Health Technical Memoranda, Health Building Notes, Scottish Health Technical Memoranda and Healthcare Associated Infection System for Controlling Risk in the Built Environment.
