Polyflor vinyl flooring has been installed across a major redevelopment and conservation project at the Acre Mills Outpatient facility, a Grade II listed former wire mill building in Huddersfield.
In order to expand the inpatient and A&E departments at nearby Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, outpatients departments from Huddersfield Royal Infirmary have been relocated to the newly-renovated Acre Mill, which was designed by Jefferson Sheard Architects of Sheffield.
As part of the revamp more than 3,300sq m of Polyflor sheet vinyl flooring from the Forest fx, Pearlazzo, Verona, Hydro Evolve and Finesse SD collections was installed by contractor, CMC Flooring of St Helens.
Polyflor’s Forest fx PUR wood effect sheet vinyl in Classic Oak 3100 and Classic Walnut 3230 has been installed in waiting rooms, reception areas, and corridors to create a warm, welcoming and calming atmosphere for employees and patients. These contrasting shades are used to define seating areas and are combined using waterjet cutting technology to create an inbuilt ramp warning sign in circulation areas. Designed with healthcare interiors in mind, the hard-wearing Forest fx range is ideally suited to these high-traffic environments.
A variety of treatment rooms throughout Acre Mill are fitted with Pearlazzo PUR flooring in Sailcloth 9719 with contrasting borders and coved skirting in Ocean Ripple 9720. This non-directional smooth vinyl flooring features tonal chips, pearlescent multi-flake decoration and Polyflor’s renowned high quality, cross-linked polyurethane reinforcement (PUR), providing a low-cost, polish-free maintenance regime for the lifetime of the product.
Polyflor’s new Polysafe Verona PUR safety flooring in Dolphin Grey 5203 shade is installed within all washrooms to provide sustainable slip resistance in these wet areas. Robust and easy to maintain, Verona’s high-clarity design and lack of visible safety aggregate means it provides a clean and contemporary look. Polysafe Hydro Evolve in Tigris 4257 was another safety floor used throughout changing rooms and shower areas, specifically designed to provide barefoot and shod slip resistance in continually-wet areas thanks to its pimple emboss and built-in safety particles.
Finesse SD flooring in Lodestone 5830 from Polyflor’s ESD collection is fitted in the health centre’s X-ray suite. This specialist vinyl floorcovering, with static dissipative properties, is engineered for electrostatic discharge protection in areas where static control is required.

Polyflor’s flooring had the ideal combination of performance and high design appeal to create a fresh and ambient space that didn’t have that clinical, institutional look.”
The Acre Mill project has recently been shortlisted in the Building Conservation category at the RICS Pro Yorkshire Awards 2015.
The sustainability credentials of Polyflor’s flooring are supported with the award of BES 6001 and certificated BRE Global A+ ratings for many ranges, which helped contribute to the BREEAM credits earned during the Acre Mills development, resulting in an overall ‘Good’ rating.
