Croydon University Hospital has installed two new ultrasound systems for obstetric examinations.
The ACUSON S2000, supplied by Siemens Healthcare, will be used for a number of procedures including first, second and third trimester scans.
Replacing an older unit, the system includes the syngo Auto OB application to automatically measure the six major fetal structures required for biometric measurements. It is also designed to reduce repetitive strain injury, with extended reach zones to put the most frequently-used controls within easy reach. In addition to its ergonomic design, a flexible articulating arm and high-resolution 19-inch flat-panel display ensure the best possible images are achieved in all lighting environments.
Siemens’ syngo Auto OB application draws on a large database of ultrasound images to provide instant and automated biometric measurements of the fetus without the need for manual calculations. Enhanced image quality also means that patients do not need to be brought back for repeat anomaly scans, helping to streamline workflow. In addition, the system allows for image storage.

“The installation was very smooth and the image quality is leaps and bounds ahead of our last system – it’s like seeing the images through a new pair of glasses,” said Sue Newman, senior sonographer at Croydon University Hospital.
“Because the image quality is so great, each examination is taking less time and we are able to see more patients every day. It is also allowing us to pick up any abnormalities much earlier than we did in the past. The patients love it as well - they can see their babies clearly on the large screen.”
