Oakland Village, Derbyshire County Council’s new 32-bed care centre offering specialist services for older people, has been awarded a Gold Standard from Stirling University’s Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC).
The £20m development was a partnership between Derbyshire County Council, Trident Group and South Derbyshire District Council. Pozzoni was responsible for the interior design scheme while the architect was Glancy Nicholls.
The building opened in March 2013 and provides 24/7 care for older people with a high level of care needs, including dementia. The scheme also contains 88 extra-care apartments for over-55s, as well as a wide variety of facilities also open to the public, including a bar, restaurant, hairdressing salon and spa, library and a contemporary village hall to accommodate public and private events.
Stirling University is an internationally-renowned centre for dementia research and expertise. A team undertook an audit of the centre, looking at how well it supported people with dementia to have independence and control over their lives, and whether the building allowed residents to be part of the local community. Oakland scored 92% against essential and recommended measures and won special praise for the high-quality finishes and materials used. The scheme will now be featured on DSDC’s website as an exemplar of best practice.
