Trust chooses NextiraOne to upgrade its core LAN network in Phase 2 development

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust has selected NextiraOne to support a core LAN upgrade at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The upgrade will refresh the existing network and mean that the hospital can continue to deliver crucial and reliable next-generation services.

The trust has a strong community reputation, providing healthcare for more than 435,000 people across Calderdale and Kirklees. It is recognised as being one of the top-performing in the country and maintaining an innovative and robust communications network is key to ensuring it continues to have a positive and successful relationship with patients.

A long-term partner of the trust, NextiraOne will continue to maintain and support the communications network to deliver core data functionality for this acute hospital service. After a successful Phase 1 project delivered at Calderdale Royal Hospital, the Phase 2 rollout at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary will include a similar configuration, involving a complete upgrade of the core network.

Working with the trust’s hosted IT service, The Health Informatics Service, NextiraOne will deploy and integrate the new and existing access layer switches using Cisco technology. This will provide the networking capabilities to support Huddersfield’s new, purpose-built data centre. This includes two Cisco Catalyst 6509-E chassis switches configured in high-availability, virtual switching system (VSS) mode to deliver the network core routing and switching functionality, facilitating a highly-scalable and multiple 10Gbps backbone with no single points of failure.

“As Huddersfield Royal Infirmary’s needs for voice, data and wireless networking continue to increase dramatically, NextiraOne has been able to provide a network that is resilient and robust, ideal for the ever-adapting landscape of its communications,” said Christopher Lewis, head of marketing at NextiraOne UK.

“The hospital’s network is crucial to its day-to-day running and to support the facilities of a much-relied-upon hospital.”
