New flooring has been installed as part of a ward refurbishment at Barnsley District General Hospital.
Flooring specialist, A Cumberlidge, has fitted more than 1,500sq m of flooring in wards 28 and 29, which are used for the admission of elderly patients.
Once the existing floor coverings had been removed, the substrate had to be prepared using Tremco SX300 NA latex smoothing compound in readiness to receive the specified sheet vinyl flooring to the corridors, the patient wards/rooms, showers and toilets.
When preparations were complete, two different colours of Polyflor Pearlazzo sheet vinyl were used – 1,380sq m of 9071 Wild Flax (white) along the corridors and in the wards themselves; and a 200mm-wide border of 9711 Atlantic Mist (blue) Pearlazzo, a turning the vinyl up the wall by 100mm in the wards and 150mm in the corridors to form an integral skirting.
A total of 70sq m of Polysafe Standard slip-resistant sheet vinyl was then installed in the toilets, sluice rooms and stores; again with the sheet vinyl turned up the perimeter walls 100mm high to form an integral cove skirting.
Damian Bradley, project manager for A Cumberlidge, said: “The shower and wet rooms were ceramic tiled throughout so, once all the old tiles were removed, we built up the levels by approx. 25mm and formed falls to the drains using Building Adhesives’ ‘Level Max’ fibre reinforced screed. Then we fitted Altro Aquarius slip-resistant sheet vinyl, turning up the walls 150mm high to form an integral site form cove.”
On the walls hygienic wall cladding in blue and white was used, which overlapped the cove skirting by 50mm, creating a safe and highly-efficient wetroom.
The team also installed Altro hygienic ArtPanels in each of the wards and in key places in the corridors, as well as splash-back cladding panels to every sink and handwash basin.
