Contract with Elekta will boost cancer management capabilities as equipment comes up for renewal

NHS Supply Chain is poised to sign a deal to purchase 10 state-of-the-art radiation therapy treatment systems as part of a drive to improve cancer services in the UK.

The contract for the Elekta Synergy linear accelerator machines will run for 18 months, replacing ageing technology as it comes up for renewal.

Bill Yaeger, executive vice president of Elekta’s oncology business, said: “NHS Supply Chain’s selection of Elekta treatment solutions as part of its efforts to improve cancer care in the UK is a great honour and we hope to continue supporting its ongoing endeavors to enhance cancer management capabilities.”

The system is equipped with 3D and 4D volumetric cone-beam imaging for soft tissue visualisation; 2D real-time, fluoroscopic-like imaging for targets that move frequently; and 2D kV imaging for standard and orthogonal planar imaging. It also features sophisticated ultra-low leakage field shaping with a fully-integrated multileaf collimator in addition to a 40cmx40 cm uninterrupted field size to simplify and refine treatment of larger-field targets.

NHS Supply Chain says the contract means NHS trusts will save up to 10% through collaborative purchasing discounts, on top of the standard discount offered via a framework agreement already in place.
