New facility to be located in Omagh, Northern Ireland

Omagh has been chosen as the location for a new acute mental health unit for Northern Ireland.

Health chiefs announced their decision this week, with Enniskillen being ditched as the alternative option.

Gerard Guckian, chairman of the Western Health and Social Care Trust, said of the news: “We are delighted with the Health Minister’s announcement, which supports the trust’s preferred option of Omagh as the location for the planned mental health inpatient unit.

“The new facility will ensure that improved mental health services are available for residents from across Northern Ireland, and in particular those living in the Western Trust area.

“The trust is now working alongside the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) to finalise the business case so that the project can progress as soon as possible.”
