Kier wins £63m redevelopment contract for new Birmingham Women’s Hospital
Construction company to lead development of £63m facility
Kier has been awarded a £63m contract to redevelop Birmingham Women’s Hospital for Birmingham Women’s NHS Foundation Trust.
Incorporating both major refurbishment and new-build, the four-year P21+ project will provide a new gynaecology ambulatory care unit, an expanded maternity unit, and new inpatient accommodation - which will comprise 100% single-patient bedrooms.
The scheme will enable the hospital to handle a greater number of deliveries and will also increase the number of neonatal cots.
Kier will complete the work in a number of phases, starting later this year with the construction of the new clinical block, forming a major new extension.
Designs for the new block will be developed through consultation with staff, women and their families, whose comments on aspects such as the single-patient bedrooms will help shape the look and feel of the accommodation.
The hospital will remain fully operational throughout the work, with Kier ensuring all construction and demolition is conducted with patient safety and wellbeing as the primary concern.
Kier framework manager, Robbie Blackhurst, said: “We have extensive experience in the delivery of healthcare schemes through long-term partnerships, having been awarded over 50 projects through the P21+ framework in the past four years, and we are pleased to be working with a new client, Birmingham Women’s NHS Foundation Trust, to develop an equally-successful collaborative relationship. By 2019 this important project will see existing accommodation replaced with the fit-for-purpose spaces and infrastructure needed to deliver modern healthcare.”
Professor Ros Keeton, chief executive of Birmingham Women’s Hospital, added: “We have been delivering healthcare services for women and families - not just in Birmingham and the West Midlands, but nationally and internationally - from our present site since 1968. Since then a lot has changed. This development will provide us with modern facilities so we can continue to deliver the very best healthcare and meet the rising demand for our services.”
The scheme is expected to be fully complete early in 2019 and will be delivered in three phases. During the first phase, Norton Court will be demolished and a new clinical block constructed in its place, forming a major new extension. This phase will also include the construction of a new entrance and energy centre. In the second phase, the north wing will be demolished and surrounding accommodation refurbished. Finally, the new birth centre fertility unit will be constructed.
