Work to start on Broadmoor Hospital revamp and new male medium-secure unit at St Bernard’s Hospital in Ealing

Kier has been given full approval to proceed with the redevelopment scheme of Broadmoor Hospital, the high-secure mental healthcare facility in Crowthorne, Berkshire; and the creation of a new male medium-secure unit (MSU) at St Bernard’s Hospital in Ealing.

The construction value of the projects is £115m and £43m respectively and will involve the construction of new hospitals, providing a modern, fit-for-purpose environment for services, securing the future of high-secure and medium-secure mental healthcare in west London and the South East. These will help patients in their recovery, reduce treatment times and support more-efficient delivery of care.

Both projects are being commissioned by the West London Mental Health Trust. Its chairman, Nigel McCorkell, said: “This is a significant achievement for everyone involved in mental health care. Given the difficulties and restrictions the current environments present at Broadmoor Hospital and the St Bernard’s MSU, our doctors, nurses and other staff have done an amazing job of providing high-quality and safe care for our patients and service users.

“However, today’s announcement means that the trust can now start to change that and begin the extensive modernisation process, which will truly make these constraints and limitations a thing of the past.”

Managing director of Kier Construction’s major projects business, Colin Lamb, added: “Kier has a proven track record of delivering highly-complex projects, creating facilities for the health sector, and this latest milestone is a significant development that demonstrates how successful the collaboration between the partners has been.

“We look forward to working very closely with the trust to deliver these facilities, which will provide excellent new facilities for the benefit of the patients and the wider communities.”

A formal contract signing will take place later this month.
