Kettering General considers buying bariatric devices

Published: 17-Aug-2011

KETTERING General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KGH) is reviewing the cost of hiring equipment for obese patients to determine if it would be more economic in the long term to buy it. The trust has spent more than £32,000 on hired bariatric equipment since October 2007 and more than £18,000 on purchasing items such as hoists, walking frames and commodes. Liz Libiszewski, director of nursing and quality at the trust, said: "The vast majority of patients cared for at KGH are looked after using standard NHS equipment, such as standard beds and hoists, which have a capacity of up to about 39 stone. On a relatively small number of occasions each year we do have to care for patients whose needs exceed this capacity, and therefore we need to either purchase, or hire, specialist equipment."
