Jimmy\'s hospital installs new MRI system
Siemens\' MAGNETOM Aera handles high-end breast, biopsies and liver imaging
St James’s Institute of Oncology, part of St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, has installed a MAGNETOM Aera 1.5 Tesla MRI system from Siemens Healthcare.
The hospital, known as ‘Jimmy’s’ is one of Europe’s largest teaching hospitals and covers 10 floors dedicated to some of the best treatment for cancer patients available anywhere in the world.
The new MAGNETOM Aera installation has joined two existing Siemens MRI systems at the hospital and replaces a legacy Siemens MRI set-up. It is handling high-end dynamic imaging including breast procedures, biopsies and liver imaging.
The MAGNETOM Aera features an Open Bore design with a 70cm wide aperture and 145cm total length, allowing a wide variety of body types to be scanned. Patients can be scanned either feet or head first, significantly improving comfort for infants, claustrophobic and bariatric patients. The 48 channel system and lightweight coils provide users with the flexibility to personalise examinations for patients based on their condition and clinical indication and workflow efficiency is improved through the use of Tim 4G and DOT technology, simplifying operation and allowing the acquisition of high-quality images with shorter examination times.
Daina Dambitis, principal superintendent radiographer at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “It is a very patient-friendly solution with its wide bore and MoodLight options so it makes for a softer atmosphere during examinations. Our team has found the Aera easy to get started with and use on a daily basis due to our long-standing relationship with Siemens and its products.”
