The new Jigsaw Building, named after the Jigsaw Charity that partially funded the £5.7m project, has officially opened at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
The 21,000sq ft building, designed by Stride Treglown, will provide a centre of excellence for women’s health, with leading facilities for oncology, haematology, gynaecology, breast care and early pregnancy, as well as cancer and blood disorders. Consulting and exam rooms and administration spaces for staff have also been included in the design.
Located between the Eye Unit and Derwent Suite for Orthopaedics, the BREEAM ‘Very Good’- rated building provides two floors of clinical and ancillary accommodation connected to the existing Nucleus hospital template, allowing patients to receive specialist outpatient care in a dedicated building that still forms part of the main hospital area.
With external and internal environments designed to be calming and friendly environments where patients can feel at ease, the use of timber effect materials and complementing colours helps provide a domestic feel with a highly-clinical finish. The extension is wrapped in variegated-colour Trespa cladding on the first floor, punctured with ribbon windows, white brick to the ground floor, and an undulated roof form to conceal rooftop plant. The architects worked closely with the Studio-Mode arts co-ordinator to procure sympathetic artwork that compliments the interior design and meets healthcare regulations.
Revitzo software was trialled during the design process, enabling the user to have complete control and walk around the proposed 3D environment. This was very successful and well received by the medical staff and stakeholders, with the Revit model generated to include all ADB components.
Working within the confines of an existing hospital site is always a challenge, but the design team, client and contractor worked together to reduce the effect of the construction works on the existing staff and patients. This team included the Stride Treglown healthcare team; Worldwise mechanical and electrical consultants; AKS Ward as structural and civil engineers; BREEAM consultant, Henderson Green; and Sound Advice Acoustics.
