1,000 people evacuated after blaze at new Royal Liverpool University Hospital site

An investigation is underway after 1,000 people were evacuated when a fire broke out at the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital site.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known, but three fire engines were called to the construction site on 3 December.

The fire involved 2m of plywood on the first floor of the building. Three men received treatment from paramedics and one required further attention.

A spokesman for contractor, Carillion, said 1,000 people were evacuated, adding: “Workers were evacuated within minutes because of a small fire. Everyone was able to go back to the site about an hour later.

“The cause is still being investigated.”

The new £335m hospital development is due to open in the summer of 2017 after construction work started in February 2014.
