Respiratory devices market to grow to $14bn thanks to adoption of homecare equipment

The global market for respiratory devices is expected to open up over the next five years due to an increase in the number of patients suffering from sleeping disorders and breathing conditions.

The increasing popularity of homecare devices such as telehealth technologies is also driving the surge in demand for innovative products, according to a new report by business intelligence experts, GBI Research.

The research predicts the market, which will be worth $14billion by 2017, will primarily be driven by the rising patient population suffering from sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is commonly caused by smoking.

Currently, around 300 million people around the world suffer from OSA, the prevalence of which increases with age, reaching 30% to 80% in elderly populations. The number affected has therefore grown during recent years in proportion with the globally-ageing population.

The shift of healthcare delivery from hospitals to homecare marks an immense change in the modern healthcare industry, caused by technological advancements, changing demographics and government initiatives to reduce healthcare expenditure

COPD similarly affects a massive global population of around 400 to 600 million people. These common conditions therefore represent a potential goldmine for anaesthesia and respiratory device companies.

The report, entitled Anaesthesia and Respiratory Devices Market to 2017 - Sleep Apnea Diagnostic Systems and Portable Anaesthesia Delivery Machines to be the Fastest Growing Categories provides key data, information and analysis on the global anaesthesia and respiratory devices market. It gives market landscape, competitive landscape and market trends information on eight anaesthesia and respiratory devices market categories – anaesthesia machines, pain management devices, regional anaesthesia disposables, respiratory devices, respiratory disposables, respiratory measurement devices, sleep apnea diagnostic systems and airway anaesthesia devices.

A spokesman for GBI Research said: “Recent years have seen an increase in disposable incomes in emerging countries, alongside increasing numbers of hospitals and the growing demand for home healthcare devices. The shift of healthcare delivery from hospitals to homecare marks an immense change in the modern healthcare industry, caused by technological advancements, changing demographics and government initiatives to reduce healthcare expenditure.

This demand for home healthcare equipment impacts positively upon the respiratory devices market, encouraged by the new respiratory devices such as portable nebulisers and continuous positive air pressure and bilevel positive air pressure machines designed for use at home

”In order to meet the growing need for medical care at home, home healthcare devices have become more easily available and include glucose meters, dialysis machines, and advanced-technology respiration devices. Innovations in design and technology have led to user-friendly devices that can treat patients without disturbing their normal routine. These are increasingly being adopted worldwide in an effort to improve individuals’ quality of life and reduce public healthcare spending.

”This demand for home healthcare equipment impacts positively upon the respiratory devices market, encouraged by the new respiratory devices such as portable nebulisers, and continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) and bilevel positive air pressure (BiPAP) machines designed for use at home.

The report forecasts the global market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.7% during the period 2010-2017, exceeding $14billion by 2017.
