Lighting supplier installs step lighting solutions in refurbished School of Oncology education centre

Lighting specialist, Gradus, has supplied step lighting solutions for the lecture theatre at The Christie’s School of Oncology’s education centre.

The unit has recently been refurbished and the auditorium now plays host to a large number of courses, conferences and guest lectures on a wide variety of medical and cancer-related topics.

Gradus’ RNT718L clear PVC-u stair edgings with Glacier (light grey) slip-resistant inserts and Interlok Advance step lighting in Blue were installed in order to create a contemporary pinpoint lighting effect between each stair, as well as on the perimeter surrounding the central flooring area of the hospital’s auditorium.

Interlok Advance LED step lighting profiles from Gradus feature a downlight, enhancing the riser of the step. Installed to increase safety by equally defining the tread and the riser of the steps in both light and dark conditions, the highlighted steps help visitors and speakers to identify the changes in level, creating a safer environment for those ascending and descending the stairs, therefore reducing the risk of trips and falls, while also providing a non-intrusive lighting effect.

The step lighting has been designed specifically to suit interior environments such as auditoria, where light is required for safety, but should not detract from the primary function of the installation. In order to meet the latest guidelines on creating safe stairs, the stair edging inserts were chosen in a colour that provides a tonal contrast with the dark blue carpet so that the step edge is defined in normal conditions; while the lighting helps speakers and visitors to safely navigate the lecture theatres in reduced light conditions.

In addition to safety, Gradus Latour carpet was installed to throughout the lecture theatre in order to provide a hardwearing yet stylish floorcovering solution.

Dr Cathy Heaven, associate director of education at The Christie said: “Gradus step lighting has resulted in a safe environment for visitors to our auditorium at the School of Oncology’s education centre. Not only do they create a relaxed and stylish environment, but they also create a very visually-appealing environment for speakers and staff alike.”

Chloe Taylor, product manager for Gradus, added: “Gradus step lighting profiles use a modular design which makes maintenance and refurbishment work easy. The step profiles were installed with full cable management to hide all wires, creating a neat finish and preventing trip hazards.”
