Second phase of £22.6m project gets underway

A new extra care housing scheme is being built in Derbyshire.

The 52-apartment Maple Mews scheme in Cressy Road is the second of a three-phase, £22.6m development between Chevin Housing Association, a member of the Together Housing Group, and Derbyshire County Council.

The homes are for people aged 55 and over with an assessed need for care or support. Facilities include a lounge; restaurant; health, beauty and bathing suites; hairdressing salon; and a guest suite which visitors can stay in for a small charge.

Amanda Garrard, Chevin Housing Association’s managing director, said: “We want residents to enjoy their retirement. They can live independently with the added benefit of having a ready-made community on the doorstep and fantastic facilities, with a superstore close by.”

Derbyshire County Council deputy leader, Councillor Kevin Gillott, added: “This will be the sixth extra care scheme the county council has developed in partnership and it is really exciting to see its progress.

“Maple Mews has the opportunity to offer a great service to residents and people living in the neighbouring community. With the excellent design of the building and by offering 24/7 on-site care and support, it will promote independence, wellbeing and dignity.

“It is also very important to us as a local authority that new developments like this help to stimulate the local economy, and we are really pleased that local suppliers are being used and local people are being employed to construct the scheme.”

The development is being constructed by Willmott Dixon.
