LJJ completes £3m mechanical and electrical installation contract

Building services specialist, LJJ, has completed a £3m mechanical and electrical installation contract at Eltham Community Hospital, which will bring Greenwich Intermediate Care Unit (GICU), GP surgeries, outpatient and social care together under one roof.

Designed by P+HS Architects and constructed by Willmott Dixon, the building services part of the project incorporates a 20kW CHP unit which will provide the main energy source for the hospital’s domestic hot water supply, supplemented by two gas-fired condensing boilers.

LJJ has also installed two plate heat exchangers for the domestic hot water and a 25,000 litre-capacity cold water storage tank to give the hospital security of water supply even in the event of an interruption to the mains.

Ventilation will be provided by five air handling units fed by a single chiller, with individual air extract units for the second-floor offices, while the heating system is delivered via a combination of radiators and radiant panels.

The CHP also contributes to the electrical load and LJJ has also installed a full electrical distribution system supported and backed up by a diesel standby generator, a UPS (uninterrupted power system), an IPS (Isolated Power System), and a MEIGaN earthing system.

LJJ has also been responsible for installation of a wide range of Healthcare Technical Memorandum-compliant electrical services, including EPR surgeons’ panels, nursecall, bedhead trunking and surgical, treatment, and inspection lighting.

The project also involved provision of all safety and security systems, including a fully-programmable fire alarm, intruder alarm system, access control and door entry system.
