CSC\'s Lorenzo system helps trust to go paperless

The Royal Lancaster Infirmary has deployed the Lorenzo electronic patient record system across its emergency department.

The rollout will transform the traditional paper-based record system to a fully electronic process that can be constantly updated in real time and accessed wherever the information is needed across all centres operated by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

Installation in the Royal Lancaster Infirmary emergency department follows earlier deployments across other wards and departments and at Furness General Hospital A&E.

Sir David Henshaw, trust chairman, said: “Making sure our doctors and nurses have the most up-to-date and relevant information on hand when they treat a patient is crucial to ensure we offer the best possible care to our local communities.

“Lorenzo enables the sharing of this information across our hospitals, meaning that patient care becomes more personal and safer, both of which are paramount priorities for us.”

Dr Jeremy Harrison, emergency care clinician at the Royal Lancaster Hospital, added: “After a degree of understandable apprehension accompanying any significant change, Lorenzo EC has successfully gone live in the emergency department.

“The main factor underlying the smooth change to Lorenzo is the clear direct benefit to patients. Data quality is the bedrock underpinning the safe delivery of high-quality care.”

The system was developed by CSC. A spokesman for the company said: “The rollout has been very smooth and reflects well on the thorough planning by the combined trust and CSC team. This now extends the Lorenzo platform and the benefits it offers to patients and clinicians to these key departments.
