People living with dementia in Guernsey can now access a new, purpose-built space at the Oberlands Centre, an adult mental health facility.
Corbiere Ward has been relocated from Duchess of Kent House and the new design is based on bringing the outside in, with the aim of creating the feeling of a small village.
The dementia-friendly interior will provide a safe, homely environment for service users, connecting to nature and incorporating Guernsey's landscape.
Created with the help of local artist, Sammy Giovinazzi, it is designed to encourage conversation between patients, staff and visitors.
The makeover includes the conversion of the dining area into a café inspired by the old Maison Carre Café in St Peter Port; artwork in corridors which reflects the local landscape; and shopfronts including the Busy Bee flower shop and the Normandy Laundrette.
The team has also created an authentic 50/60s ‘front room’.
Ward manager, Bridgette Loveridge, said the move from the Duchess of Kent House to the Oberlands presented an ideal opportunity to create a dementia-friendly living environment.
