W D Davidson and Sons scoops Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Award for work on dementia unit at Monkwearmouth Hospital

Products from Johnstone’s Trade’s portfolio have helped a Gateshead-based decorating contractor win a prestigious Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Award after they created a lasting impression on patients at a state-of-the-art, 24-bed dementia unit in Sunderland.

The unit, designed by Medical Architecture and constructed by main contractor, Laing O’Rourke, is part of a £10m new-build scheme at Monkwearmouth Hospital and is the first of its kind to open in the North East.

W D Davison and Sons, a family company spanning three generations, is celebrating 50 years of business in style after being recognised for its work on the building at the prestigious 2013 Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Awards , claiming the top prize in the Health and Education category.

Thousands of litres of Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt, Premium Contract Matt and Acrylic Eggshell were used throughout the unit by the decorators during a tight four-month timescale. The paint was used on corridors, offices, washrooms, stairwells, lounges, dining areas and doors throughout the unit, all of which now boast bold, fresh looks.

The unit also cleverly uses bespoke digitally-created wallpapers supplied by Johnstone’s to adorn some of the walls, which include striking images of an early Sunderland map and the Sunderland seafront. Alongside the memory boxes outside residents’ rooms, the interior has been designed to evoke happy recollections from their past.

Bill Davison from W D Davison and Sons said: “This was a particularly large project and both the client and we were delighted with the finished result and how it all came together. We’ve had some excellent feedback and are really proud to have played our part in this project. We always use Johnstone’s Trade products as we know we can rely on them to deliver a quality finish every time and this was no exception.”
