The innovative Daffodil House, designed by North East architectural practice, Niven Architects, was Highly Commended in the Community Benefit category at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards held in Newcastle earlier this month.
The eight-apartment building providing independent and supported living for adults with learning disabilities in Hemlington, Middlesbrough, is administered by The Camphill Village Trust.
Niven’s ‘inclusive’ approach to the design - together with the use of a BIM model - enabled the residents to visualise the space more easily and achieve the homes they desired.
The success of the building has resulted in it being cited as an exemplar for use in the transition of young adults with learning disabilities to independent living.
Niven is currently exploring the use of this design in other locations.
