Official opening of Penntorr Health marks exciting change in health service delivery in Torpoint

Torpoint’s new £2m health centre was officially opened on Thursday, 19 March.

The newly-built facility is a modern centre that is now the combined home for the Rame Group GP Practice and other services previously based at the Hooper Street Health Clinic and provided by a range of healthcare providers.

It has been operational since mid-February and enables more patients to be seen, diagnosed and treated closer to home, while encouraging closer working relationships between the different healthcare providers.

Penntorr Health will also offer a range of high-quality community clinic services, as well as being a base for district nursing teams and home to a new minor surgery unit and a Lloyds Pharmacy. South Western Ambulance Service also has dedicated facilities on site for its staff and will be using the centre as a base from which to respond to emergency calls.

Relocated services previously based at Hooper Street, Torpoint, include physiotherapy, podiatry, speech and language therapy, hearing assessments, orthotics, cardiac, and stroke clinics.

The building’s intelligent design includes a single main reception, shared clinical areas, staff facilities and administration areas, which all encourage efficient and effective utilisation of the space and help to futureproof the flexibility of the centre and the range of services it can provide.

Rame Group family GP, Dr Lawrence Barnes, said: “The facility at Penntorr offers us the opportunity to provide first-class general practice to the people of the Rame Peninsula from state-of-the-art premises.

“It allows us to integrate care with other team members and, due to the capacity of the building, to invite hospital colleagues to run clinics, perform investigations, and carry out procedures closer to our patients' homes.”

The £2m project was delivered by Public Private Partnership (LIFT company), Community 1st Cornwall, in partnership with NHS Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group, Peninsula Community Health, Community Health Partnerships, South West Ambulance Services NHS Foundation Trust (SWAST), and the Rame Group GP practice.
