Work is set to begin on a new multi-million-pound primary care centre in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.
The new centre will bring together primary and community care services and will help reduce unnecessary hospital admissions.
The facility will be situated on the site of the former Alfred Barrow School after permission was granted by health commissioners.
The new BREEAM ‘excellent’ rated facility is a 5,000sq m site developed through a Public Private Partnership LIFT programme led by Community Health Partnerships (CHP), working with its local joint venture partner, eLIFT Cumbria. ESH Construction will commence construction of the new centre in January 2018, with completion planned for spring 2019.
CHP’s development director, Eugene Prinsloo, said: “Our purpose is to improve patient access to primary and community care through investment in high-quality health facilities.
“CHP is proud to be able to bring local services together in a modern building that supports modern healthcare delivery. The people of Barrow will see the benefits of how public private partnership will help transform their health and wellbeing closer to home.”
The facility will house several GP surgeries and community and children’s health services in one building while preserving the oldest part of the Victorian Alfred Barrow School building for office accommodation and the ambulance service. The centre will have a welcoming, easy-to-access entrance and ample patient parking.
NHS Morecambe Bay Clinical Commissioning Group vice chairman and Barrow GP, Dr Geoff Jolliffe, said: “I’m thrilled that we’re all set for the next stage of this exciting new health service project. This project has been many years in the making and will be a huge boost for the people of Barrow.”
The project management for CHP and health commissioners has been undertaken by a local organisation, CCL Solutions. Its director, Tim Holliday, said: “We are delighted to have reached this significant milestone which has brought together multiple stakeholders into an innovative health facility.”
