Equipment to enhance diagnostic confidence in regional foetal medicine department

Birmingham Women’s NHS Foundation Trust has installed a fourth ACUSON S2000 ultrasound system to coincide with the opening of its new foetal medicine department.

The Siemens Healthcare system is being used to help staff tackle complex foetal conditions as part of the new department’s drive to improve patient experience through shortened waiting times, thereby reducing stress.

Birmingham Women’s Hospital has established a long-standing relationship with Siemens ultrasound division and was the first unit to purchase the ACUSON S2000 system on its release four years ago. The systems have been acquired as replacements for legacy Siemens SONOLINE Antares and ACUSON Sequoia equipment.

The scanners deliver high image quality in both B-mode and Colour Doppler for increased diagnostic confidence, enabling clinicians to distinguish the most subtle tissue detail and structures. Advanced colour sensitivity also allows visualisation of slight velocity changes of blood flow to better detect abnormalities as well as visualisation of fine vessels.

“As a tertiary centre receiving referrals from across the West Midlands and further afield, it is very important we have excellent quality systems in place,” said Veronica Donovan, matron in the foetal medicine department at Birmingham Women’s Hospital.

“The opening of what we believe is a world-class facility to diagnose a broad range of complex foetal conditions such as monochorionic complications including twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, is reinforced by the installation of the fourth ACUSON S2000 system.”
