PACS viewers, control panels and surgical lighting installed to tight deadlines

New touch-screen control panels, PACS viewers, and LED surgical lighting have been installed in four operating theatres at Whittington Hospital in London.

The challenging nine-day programme for installation and commissioning included creating bespoke mounting and access arrangements for the control panels.

The project was managed through FES FM, which provides facilities management to Whittington Hospital, and is also responsible for upgrading elements of the infrastructure to deliver energy savings and improved performance.

Bender UK carried out an upgrade of lighting and control facilities in operating theatres 1 and 2 last year, and completed work on the other four theatres in July, using STS Electrical for the installation of the panels and additional cabling.

The team scheduled its work around the requirements of the surgical facilities, which meant early-morning and late-night working to achieve the deadlines.

Each of the four theatres is now equipped with Steris LED lighting controlled by Bender’s hygienic touch-screen control panels.

The upgrade also included replacing X-ray viewers with 42ins PACS screens linked to the hospital’s IT network.

Bender created a bespoke installation of the touch-screen panels to integrate with existing stainless-steel surfaces within the operating theatres.

The project used existing back boxes to provide rear service access and minimise the disruption caused by the installation. It means future service requirements can be met without compromising hygiene in the theatres.

David Williamson, national sales manager for Bender UK’s advanced range of products and services designed for the medical sector, said: “Our company has extensive experience of working alongside facilities managers and clinical staff to ensure upgrades and refurbishment projects are completed with minimum interruption of their normal working arrangements.

“For Whittington the team also developed a bespoke solution to integrate the panels within the operating theatre, which again reduced the disruption for clinical services.”

Whittington Hospital is part of Whittington Health NHS Trust and provides hospital and community care services to 500,000 people living in Islington and Haringey as well as other London boroughs including Barnet, Enfield, Camden and Hackney.

The hospital delivers a range of services including accident and emergency, maternity, diagnostic, therapy, and elderly care.
